Wilbur H Siebert
As a professor of history at Ohio State University in the early 1890’s, he set out to engage his students by sending home a questionnaire for the students to give to family and friends seeking out information on the secret “Underground Railroad.” His was the first real study of this illegal operation. He amassed over 13 volumes of material and published his findings in The Underground Railroad from Slavery to Freedom in 1898.
